NP. I have no issue with open nanny cams and letting a nanny know that you have one.

I think it is terrible and wrong to have a hidden nanny cam and not inform the nanny that you have one. If you feel that you need this, then you should hire a different person. You need to have much more trust of the person you hire to care for your child than this type of action signifies.

Assuming OP is putting them in the house, that's not illegal.

Things can sometimes get weird even if a trusted nanny. We had one for awhile who I thought was great and trusted completely. Then one day I had a dad stop me at the neighborhood playground and say “I wanted to let you know I think your son (3) is a really great kid. Your nanny can be hard on him sometime, but he seems really great to me.” Obviously I was alarmed - did he mean she was stricter on behavior than he may be but still reasonable and handle calmly? Or angrily snapping at him? Or berating him? The said it as I was leaving with my kids so I couldn’t follow up with him to understand better.

The nanny knew we had cameras (contract said we could and each kids room had a nannit monitor so that’s very obvious). I briefly set up one in the common playroom so I could get a better sense of how she was treating him when alone so that I could address appropriately with her if needed. I’m not going to throw away a great nanny over a random virtual strangers comment, but I did need to verify that what I thought happened when I wasn’t around is what was actually happening

Good nannies will quit on the spot when they find out that you hid cameras. If you believe your nanny is harming your child, fire her and you stay home and take care of your child.

I’ll never understand parents who do this. Why do you want to “catch” someone in the act? Why not avoid “the act” altogether by hiring someone you trust and/or having visible cameras?

Nanny here. Most states are a one-party consent state. You can legally hide and record people in your home as long as it’s not in places where the nanny will be in state of undress. I’ve worked with nanny cams - parents had to disclose because my state needs consent to audio tape, but I’ve never had any issue with it.
