Usually it is American and/or Canadian corporate CEO's or corporate executives that get detained. I believe some are still currently detained.

As long as he's not involved in a foreign government or foreign press, the government won't care at all. Just be clear he shouldn't suddenly develop an urge to protest. Large public squares in cities are where the government really monitors things (because that's where people may protest) but they aren't going after random tourists. Your son is likely to get more attention from female admirers than the government.

If you are not important and your kid doesn't do anything stupid, they won't get detained. Your concern should be more about how welcoming and friendly the locals will be, esp if the whole point of going is the experience the culture. As others have said, consider Taiwan if you are concerned. It may just not be worth the worry, and you will get everyone you are looking for in Taiwan anyways.

I don’t think you have to worry about general physical safety or even being detained as long as your kid is respectful and not an idiot, but definitely replace any electronics after they get home.

It sounds like no one posting here has actually been to China lately...

The government is not going to target your kid for anything, unless they show up with a "Free Tibet" banner and try to unfurl it in Tiananmen Square.

Chinese people remain friendly to Americans espeically white Americans, and no one's going to bother you. They're usually too shy to speak to foreigners because they worry their English isn't good enough. I've been going to China for years, and I was there as recently as last month.

The biggest risk is your kid will get hit by a scooter bike, as they are all electric now so they whiz by very quietly. But just follow the pedestrian crossing signals and cross streets defensively.
