OP here. Don’t you need all As for UVA?
Leaning towards Tech. We honestly never looked into VCU because I thought it was known more for Art and Nursing.

I think a bigger school would give your anxiety child more options to blend in or discover their people. It’s the smaller ones that feel like a fishbowl which gives people anxiety & puts more pressure on them to fit in. (High school can feel this way when you have the same kids in all your classes and you can’t get away…especially private schools)

Look at UMW or CNU, both smaller schools that have pre-vet advising.

Please keep your ADHD and high anxiety kid away from my dog. Thanks

+1 and for our VA kid they gave merit to make it comparable to in-state options.

Was also going to suggest this!

Agreed. Good biology program, and not super competitive to get in.

Try JMU but apply early and I mean before 9/30 to show desire. Try VCU, UMW, CNU. Also, look at Salisbury, UMBC and Towson since OOS might help.

I studied biology at SUNY Binghamton. Cost out of state is similar to in state VA. Ugly, ugly school but it was a perfect school for someone that doesn't want to party too hard, doesn't care about sports and wants to hang out with kids that keep claiming that are going to transfer to Cornell (they don't).

Anonymous wrote:Biology is such a broad field. I suggest having your DC dig deeper into what aspect of bio interest them - cells? animals? humans? bacteria? DNA/RNA? Then match up with schools that have good programs in those areas. And don’t rule out OOS - for an A/B student there are a lot of schools listed 60 or lower in USNWR that offer merit aid to make it competitive with in state VA (esp UVA/W&M).

+100

I went to VA Tech for Biology--last two years had a Microbiology concentration. I focused mainly on pathogens/immunology/parasites, etc.

Biology is a very broad subject--especially today. I went to grad school in Immunology/Molecular Biology. Grad school was fully paid--full stipend by being a teaching assistant (different school).

Tech has great programs. The Vet school is also a big plus which is also what a lot of Bio majors go for.

I think any school with a biology major option that has a record of sending kids to grad schools and has easy enough to access research opps for undergrads would be good. The list will be long. Look at the websites
