Insist that instead of wasting their money on junk that will eventually break or be trashed, they contribute the amount they'd use on those gifts to a 529 or another account for future education expenses.
We did this with my parents and ILs. They still bought the kid a present, but something much smaller and with a restricted price, like $20 or under for kids and $50 or under for tweens & teens.

I can only remeber what 3/5 kids got for their 3rd birthda. Powerwheels, that giant LOL dollhouse, and a deluxe play kitchen for their 3rd birthday.

Monster Jam! We got this for my son last year and he got a couple tshirts as well. I hate all things Monster Jam but man, he loved that Gravedigger tshirt even more than I hated it.

You could do stuffed animal with Baltimore zoo membership too.
After 3 kids I spend about half an hour picking toys up off the floor
We are being very stingy with toys this year, and probably indefinitely into the future

Scooter is foldable and goes in a closet. Play kitchen goes in kids room. Nothing else I listed takes up room.
