Yes to Mexico City. Maybe add a side trip to San Miguel de Allende. But there’s plenty to do in Mexico City for a week. Stay in Condesa or Roma.

For anniversary trip in 2019, I loved Budapest. Great food, great ruins, funky town, interesting history, beautiful architecture (and yes, we were giving money to the Orban government, but....it was still great.)

We went to Prague as well and I didn't love it as much, but there are other places you could combine Budapest with. We took a train between the cities and stopped at Bled Castle (I think) in Slovenia, which was a highlight--up on a cliff on crumbling walls overlooking the Danube.

Amsterdam is also fabulous for a few days, and you can do cool biking day trips and visit the countryside in the Netherlands. Don't stay too near the train station and you'll be fine.

That is silly. A week is a nice enough amount of time for one city. We have had lovely Paris and London trips with direct flights for less than a week when the opportunity arose. But yes, it is a thumb on the scale for direct flights from DC.

Agree! I meant we had been to Costa Rica…but if we were to stay in the Americas this time, yes, more inclined to do something like Mexico City, as suggested above.
