Own somewhere between 500 & 1000? Not sure - would have to go count. The bookshelf in my bedroom are all the books I love to reread and they are organized by color since I look at them a lot - I wanted a harmonious view. Mass markets or massive book series - I'm looking at you Robert Jordan! - are all in the basement. Lots of classics down there too. Other book shelves are also stocked with favorites and sometimes "nice" looking hardcovers.

I organize by color and I love the way my bookshelves look! I haven't read all of the books and so it's actually fun to browse my shelves when looking for a new book to read. Granted, I have to rely on visual memory when I'm looking for a specific title, but seeing my rainbow of a bookshelf brings me joy daily. The exception to this are my Stephen King books and my vintage cookbook collection, as well as work related books/journals, etc. We are also heavy library users in my family and I'll alternate between only reading books already on my shelf and seeking out book from the library. I reread my favorites.

One pile of "going to read" and one pile of "take to the little library" plus one on the bedside table that I am reading now.

Why so many I mean do you reread or reference them all the time? I can't imagine all the dust they must collect and moisture.

I love them, I reread them or refer to them, I lend them to friends or family. Why not? I dust my shelves. My dream is a house with a dedicated room for a library. I don't have space for anymore bookshelves. I don't have lots of any other possession. This is what I like.

I have a lot of books, though I have probably given half away in the last few years. I used to do by genre but decided it was too inconsistent. Now I have a broad division by language (bilingual household) and then within that it's alphabetical.
