I was on a jury recently for an attempted carjacking that was tried as a robbery because the defendant snatched keys for to a car that wasn't on site, black on black violence. The victim was on a work break of an overnight shift, after turning his life around after being charged in a criminal case. (He said he wasn't as lucky as defendant because he was appointed a lawyer, insinuating that the defense attorney was not court appointed. We found out afterward that was, in fact, true.) Anyhow, about 1/2 of the jury vehemently complained about why this was even a case at all. It was honestly shocking and deeply upsetting. The jury's view of the victim, the neighborhood store which refused subpoenas for camera footage because it was the defendant's hangout, how ambulances refused to stop for the victim, how two young jury members refused to discuss the case saying nothing anyone said would make them convict. Afterward, I googled and the defendant is a serial carjacker.

I wonder if this will be like the doorbell camera rebate program where you have to agree that the police can review footage upon request at any time. I'm curious if you're signing away permission for tracking in some way other than if your car is stolen.

Fwiw, I'm in one of the areas that is doing the pilot and may pick up the tag.

There was an article in the Post about a Capitol Hill woman who was carjacked. When the police showed up at her home, they watched as she used her Airbag to track the moving vehicle across DC. MPD said that, even though the vehicle could be located in real time, the police were not allowed to pursue the vehicle with the carjackers inside.

So the DC government can engage in its latest performative gesture by giving away Airtags or the equivalent. But this will be ineffective while the woke left on the DC Council continues to prioritize the rights of criminals above those of crime victims and the general public. It's past time to empower the police.

Something similar happened to friends of ours. So how would these airtags address this? You'd have to watch it zip around committing crimes, and you'd only be able to recover it when abandoned--but you'd do it yourself vigilante style with no help from MPD? This is exactly what isn't supposed to happen, good grief.

This has happened all over the south. Different stand your ground laws have led to car owners calling 911 and telling them they are goin to recover their car and the cops are welcome to come or not. Here's one from Texas where the car owner hunted and then killed the thief

Well, this is where we are as a city? It took us ..I don't know...6 months to 'recover' our stolen car in DC in the condition as you described it. The police/camera system/parking enforcement were zero help in our effort as none of these 'arms' focuses on stolen vehicles or coordinate with each other. We finally were notified when the abandoned vehicle team picked it up after multiple reports. Still, you are better back knowing its fate as quickly as possible and less crime committed with it.

But DC DPW and DMV will helpfully add every speed camera and parking ticket fine (doubled) to your carjacked vehicle's tab, so if you get the vehicle back and go to renew your registration, you'll have to pay up first!!

Yes, this. But they would not use the cameras or license plate readers to help us recover our car, and the amassed tickets/abandoned vehicle departments don't "speak to" the car theft investigation arm of MPD-because they don't care to link that and go investigate why a car is collecting a million tickets or just sitting on the side of the street forever. We learned a LOT about the help offered to crime victims in DC when our car was stolen.

Really? So much revisionists history. Most Ward 3 residents had to wait months to get the vax, primarily because the color of their skin. That was the start of so many illogical and probably illegal policies that brought us to where we are today. I’d lump that in with extended school closures, reimagining policing, and sanctuary cities. We may never recover from this era of policymaking. Let’s NOT do this again.

That's what the article said and maybe that's what the woman told them and maybe that's even what the police said. But, that is not the law. The law prevents pursuits, in other words, driving a high speed through streets full of pedestrians, bikers, and other cars. The rationale is that a car is not worth killing innocent people over. There is no law preventing police from simply driving to a place that a car is located. If that is what the police said, they are simply being lazy and not doing their job.

Sooo...if not pursued by the police, you think that these young carjackers are driving carefully within the speed limits, observing all posted signs and stoplights, and being on the lookout for pedestrians and cyclists? Riiiight.
