DD's private school friends seemed to have a much easier time getting into UVA this past cycle. Maybe they liked private school this year. Maybe they'll prefer kids from rural areas the year your kids apply. Maybe they'll favor artistic kids, or kids who were really involved with community service. Who know how GPA and SAT scores will count (or not) in 7-10 years.
My point is, you're looking for which school gives your kid the best chance and that's not even a valid question to ask. There's no correct answer.
Big universities don't say to themselves, "hey let's take more private school kids this year" or "how about we have a class that's primarily rural kids this year." Your DD's private school friends had better qualifications and essays, simple as that.

Get them the best education possible that you can and see where life leads them. Don't toss names in front of them. Good luck

Any bright child with involved parents will do well at any of these schools and be competitive for UVA or VT. Doesn't mean they will automatically get in but they'll be competitive.
This whole post is really emblematic of the stereotype of striver culture here.
This line usually gets trotted out when someone might be considering an alternative to a generally MC/UMC school like W-L. You’d likely have no issue steering them away from Wakefield or its equivalents in Fairfax.

I am also concerned about my son not being able to make to AAP in Fairfax. Is it worthy to paying all the “premiums” to be in McLean to be non-AAP students? I have more confidence in my daughter making to AAP starting 3rd grade next year.
Regarding Marshall high, is it much better than WL? Do we have data how much UVA admission for Marshall and McLean?
Marshall and W-L both have the IB program. Can’t say one is better than the other. W-L will end up a lot bigger in a few years given the school’s recent expansion. One difference is W-L offers both IB and AP classes but Marshall is only IB.
McLean always has more kids going to UVA than Marshall but it’s a wealthier school so maybe the same kid’s odds of getting into UVA would be the same coming from each school.
Personally prefer AP to IB as it’s more flexible and AP schools offer more courses and don’t have specific two-year sequences.
