+1 but not W&M bc kid not interested. Also added a few state U's honors colleges and merit-giving SLACs, in not "flyover" but I'd describe them as "geographically desirable due to access to outdoor recreation." Applied also to 3 top 20's, got into one, and ended up there, although the state flagships were strong contenders with the opportunities for adventure plus honors benefits and low $$.

GATech is not a safety with that stat if you are majoring in Cs. DS had a 1580, 4.92 wgpa, 4.0 uwgpa, CS major. Rejected.

I’m from flyover country and my kid is applying to my home state flagshio. It’s a quick shorthand to say not the coasts of Chicago. And lots of people fly over my state. Look out the window as you do —- the view is awesome! I’m not insecure about it. And lords of people in my home state are probably happy to have people just fly over—-they are not craving acceptance from the coasts.

OP, a 1550 as a stand-alone metric really doesn't mean much without a GPA, EC's etc to better know reach/target/safety options.

This is a very helpful thread.

Safeties for my kid (this year, so I don’t have any results!) include Boulder, UMD, WPI. Aiming for Ivies or MIT.

Yes, I would. In fact, the intentionally pejorative way that term is used should resonate with anyone living along the coasts who sees their political representation disproportionately influenced by the interests of people in flyover country.

UVA, UNC, Ga. Tech, St. Andrews, Kings College London.

UMD, UMass, WPI, Rochester. 1590 MCPS Magnet. Went to an Ivy

1560 from a big 3.

Safeties were SMU, Auburn. Loyola Marymount

Safety UMD and ASU honors college - both offered great merit. But went to AWS.
