Chariots of Fire - Not heavy in a sad way, but really touches on ambition, the human spirit, and the importance of sticking to one's principles.

I recently watched Patton. My grandpa was in the 11th armored division and it really drove home some of the horrors of the WWII battlefield that I'm sure he was never able to forget.

I don't know about heavy, but many of Richard Linklater's films are deeply philosophical and introspective.

I also have always loved the movie Contact (based on a Carl Sagan book, with Jodie Foster). I think it might not age well, I'm not sure, but it had a very profound impact on the way I think about life and religion when it came out in the 1990s.

Incredibly good movie, deeply affecting. You really need to be in the right mindset/mood to watch it.
