This is probably the right answer, that's where we started out a year ago, looking at in state public schools. Major is undecided, which might work better at WM. Looking at the percentages on the common app it seems like it would be fun to roll the dice a bit more but we'll be happy at any of the top VA schools.

The SAT seems okay but not great and the ecs seem very average if he's president of a school type club.

Tough to offer advice without knowing specifics. The 1450 SAT is a bit low, but could be offset by a high class rank & rigorous courses & leadership positions.

What classes has he taken? The GPA doesn’t tell us enough

DC 's friend had similar stats least year. Rejected at UVA and VT for engineering, but got accepted into Purdue, GT, and Penn St. It was strange since GT is a higher ranked engineering school. Ended going to GT. It could be that NOVA has too many similar high stats applicants. DC's friend should have moved to a rural area in VA for senior year to have had a chance.

Hmmm... well, my DS has similar stats (if DCUM counts a 4.389 GPA as a 4.4 which is not a given ) with a 1490 SAT (780 math) plus a lot more sports (2 varsity sports plus club sport commitments) and is applying to College of Engineering, which is a tougher admit. He applied to UVA plus VT, NC State, Penn State, and Purdue. Hoping for UVA, but realize that it is not a given at all. Is your child interested in any other schools besides UVA, WM, and VT? If so, then encourage them to apply. What is their intended major?

The kid ain’t getting into a top ten school like Harvard or Yale or anywhere else worth paying double UVA’s instate tuition. That’s for sure. And UVA itself ain’t a given. Not by a long shot.
