If this is OP, I can tell you 4 hours nightly HW is way too much from our experience and you’re right to be asking how to support DC. I also have a 6th grader in AAP at haycock and they are expected to read 40 pages/daily and then I’d estimate 15-30 min of additional homework 3 times/weekly, which is mostly test review. The rest of the work DC completes at school. Obviously all kids work at different paces with different standards of perfection, but I’d suggest reaching out to their teacher as they will help you figure out what’s going on.

Definitely sit with him. First go over his planner and help him decide the order of subjects to study. I recommend math first as it tends to use a ton of “brainpower”. Then maybe alternate an easier subject with a harder one. For my kid, it would be something like,

Math
Reading novel for English
Science lab report
Social studies mapping
Spanish sheet and study vocab for test

Then have him take out his math. Look over the problems and figure out how long it “should” take. Let him solve the first problem with him beside you. Once you’re sure he knows what to do, have him work on the rest of the math. You should stay in the room and keep an eye on him so he stays on track. (I often clean the refrigerator, haha). After he’s done with math, let him take a 10 minute wiggle break and it’s on to the next thing. Repeat with each subject, helping him get started and staying nearby for encouragement, support, or helping him get back on track.

6th graders are mush brains. They all are. My kid had apparently never, ever seen a fraction in his life until last night’s homework. Sigh.

Ask them about young scholars program and find out if it would be a better fit than AAP
