I’m so glad you started this OP! Sorry about your problem, but it reminded me to send a group text to the “5th grade moms” group I was just added to last week. I said “hi, in case anyone is trying to match the number to a name, this is Sara, mom to Lily” and everyone followed! Hurray. Makes it much easier that I thought to do this now.

DP, but I wouldn't believe it. I don't get the need or the purpose for the lie, anyway. There is no faux pas in not immediately saving every phone number to your contacts; it doesn't mean the person isn't important. That's so stupid.

I hate text chains. I am on one that is "third grade moms" and it feels like everyone is trying to be witty and cute. It feels like public speaking to respond to all these people. I don't speak unless I have something important to say and I hate big groups, I prefer to socialize one on one.

I personally don’t need to know who everyone is—it’s like an email blast to whatever group (school, sport, etc). I don’t understand why it’s important to know who everyone is in a text chain—if you were friends with whoever, you would already know their phone number.

Yes, this similar thing just happened on a text and people were speaking up— who is this? Etc. I also found it annoying that it was started.

Don’t say the new phone thing. It’s an other lie that’s going to mess you up later.

Ask someone you know privately or be direct in the group text.

I’m embarrassed saying this but there are some numbers I never saved and now forgot who’s who. Can everyone please reply with their names so I can organize my contacts?

If it is a whole group I don’t know, I just identify myself and ask others to do the same.

If I am just missing a few, I ask the friend (in the group) I’m closest to.

No one memorizes numbers anymore. You got a new phone & lost your contacts (ugh, how annoying). Can everyone please text their name? I bet lots of people are missing a bunch of folks' on the threads names & people will be secretly glad.

Enter the numbers in Cash App.

Google the numbers or try whatever the free version is of white pages. If there are out of area area codes, you can at least find out where they’re from which May clue you in.
