This could potentially not be a big deal, OP. If it's a lead service line, which is most likely, DC will pay to have it replaced. There's a trenchless method that doesn't involve digging up anything beyond the sidewalk. It's a bit of a hassle to arrange, but that's about it.
Things like this just come up when owning a house. In this case, mercifully, it'll likely just take a few hours of your time to deal with. Best of luck to you.
