UConn is # 58, UMass in the 60s, and Alabama is 170. But keep telling yourself what a stellar fun school it is.

Op, I would ask the school to put you in touch with some students there on the same merit scholarship or have your child do an overnight with a similar student to get a real feel for the school. There are many posters here who are only familiar with T20 schools and don’t realize that Alabama has several hundred national merit semifinalists attending. Presumably your dd would be in the honors college and honors dorm so would have a good peer group.

We recently toured. DS also has a nice scholarship package and is a minority. We were blown away with the university. I would strongly suggest you visit so your daughter can make a better informed decision. Before the visit, it was the last school on list, now is high.

Such a tone deaf post. Tell me you are white without telling me you are white. You should not dismiss racial concerns of others.

It’s one of the schools we will look at for my daughter. She’s very studious, very liberal but truly open minded and loves to have an active social life. She’s very interested in sororities and wants warm weather. I think it could be a great fit and come with an incredible financial aid package for merit.

If your daughter is National Merit Scholar or close there are a number of schools that would offer a good financial package. Your daughter does not sound like a particularly good fit for U Alabama based on your brief profile (maybe you omitted that she is a big CFB fan). Going somewhere as specific as U Alabama just based on dollars isn't a good idea IMO. Nothing against U Alabama for those who love it.

If your kid is NMF, with comparable academic profile, they will have better options. DS (21) had a free ride from UF (that was the last year they did that for NMFs) but turned it down. We know a few member of faculty at Florida universities and they advised against it. Most send their kids to schools outside of FL and Alabama is way worse academically. Having said that, we are considering AL & U-SC for our second kid who's no shining star academically. DC2 just sent in their applications over the weekend so waiting to hear. We are also Asian, BTW.

DD has a friend who is a freshman there, coming from an academically rigorous private. Friend got into higher ranked schools but really liked Alabama. She was planning on participating in her sport there, but is not an athletic recruit. Friend is happy and wound up joining one of the more mellow sororities.
