Recently flew to Italy. Woke up super early so I’d be tired at 8pm my time which is when we’d be settled in post-dinner on the plane. Cat napped but didn’t sleep despite taking melatonin. Powering through that first day on the ground was no issue, but needed an early bedtime and a full night’s sleep for the next day!

Melatonin. And don't take it for the first time right before the flight; experiment with it first.

My psychiatrist won't even prescribe Ambien anymore due to all of the weird side effects. Some people are taking Trazodone for sleep these days, but I wake up sluggish and with a headache when I take it; YMMV.

I’ve done this often and I’ll take some sleep aid but I really don’t sleep just snooze a bit. I’m generally fine until around 4pm when it catches up to me so being in an office isn’t a problem until early pm. Then I’m entering zombie world. If you are a business road warrior you just suck it up until you hit 50 when economy plus isn’t enough. Then you use your miles to upgrade or just pay the difference to keep you sane.

Don't take Xanax with alcohol it is dangerous and ill advised. Also alcohol is stronger on a flight and won't help you sleep.

If you take the Xanax - up to 2 x .25mg you will be knocked out but able to function after you land.

Instead on focusing on sleeping, which may stress you out (especially if there is turbulence the entire flight), why not focus on just trying to relax and not put pressure on yourself during the flight. Then when you land, can you pay for a one-time access to a club where maybe you could take a hot shower or otherwise freshen up before your meeting? Get some coffee, stretch, and power through the day.

I did this once on a flight from LAX to DC, I don't even remember the safety announcement, literally opened my eyes and we were on the ground in DC. Like what just happened! In fairness it was my first time taking X and I had no idea it would hit me like that. PS not sure this is a good idea

Hydrate before getting on the plane and pop a unisom sleep tab (the sublingual kind that dissolves) 90 mins before you get on the plane.

I don't know about this. I have to drink as much water as possible and constantly walk to avoid blood clots. Taking pills to sleep in an upright position doesn't sound like a good idea.

I took one Benadryl and a few glasses of wine to Munich this summer. I slept a little

What time is the flight? I recently flew to London on a flight that left at 6:30 pm so just didn’t sleep that night and powered through till about 7.30pm before going to bed.

Where in Europe? The flight to London is really tight and you are going to have to try to get to sleep right away.
