Having said that, I would not be ok with someone very drunk leaving my home and driving. Not because of any legal liability but because it is dangerous. He could hurt someone.

Agree with all of this. PP made me snicker. But I also bet BIL's wife is sued to driving and it is also very possible BIL could be sober enough to drive home. Not sure how long Thanksgiving is at your house, but some family celebrations definitely go 8 hours or more.

100 percent this. My FIL only drinks whiskey with ice. It's pretty much impossible to gauge his consumption because of top ups, but trust and believe by the end of the night there is a big old dent in the handle on the bar.

I mean, I would just because fridge space is at a premium on t-day, I might not have room for a 12 pack of beer in the fridge.
As for hiding it, not sure why that is your responsibility or concern at all. Do you want to hide it from your kids, you don’t want them to know some people drink a lot? I don’t get the need to hide it - it’s not you or DH, so why do you care.

No, that’s not how it works when you’re a legal adult and serving your self at somebody’s house.

It is fine to have a cooler of beer in the garage on ice for a party.
