I am surprised some parents are being so cavalier about this. New parent here. I was glad the administration took it seriously. There was quite a large police presence at all points.
I’m not a new parent. I had a third grader on 911. I’m also a teacher and know fake bomb threats are pretty common, especially certain times of year. They are meant to disrupt schools. If someone really want to harm our kids physically, they wouldn’t warn us.
DS came home. He’ll return after lunch.

Not only are bomb threats common at schools but there's been a serial bomb threatener in the area for the past year or so. They've shut down malls, government sites, public areas for a while.

Bomb threats happened in my MCPS high school in the '90s. They're usually done by kids who
1) Think it's funny and just want to cause chaos at school
2) Mentally disturbed kids who are acting out as a cry for attention
3) Kids who want to get out of a test or assignment they aren't ready for a need an excuse
It's not new. Doesn't mean you don't take each threat seriously, because you never know if or when it will be real this time, but it's an old tactic kids have been using to disrupt the school environment for decades.

Of course it's a false alarm. Here it's more assault weapons. In my high school in Paris, we got bomb threats that seemed more serious, since there were real bombs in the Paris metro at that time.
