Shortage is real and there are hundreds of open positions. Maybe parents can step up and sub instead of complaining and bashing teachers, and driving them away from this profession?

My school district just got teachers a $3k bonus. Special ed teachers who have high caseloads (must be all of them at this point) are getting an even bigger bonus. Early numbers suggest an even bigger exodus of special ed teachers than in the last three years (and that was a lot). Not even large bonuses will keep teachers.

I don’t get responses like this. What do you think school systems can do? You can’t making qualified teachers magically appear.
And this type of unreasonable behavior will simply push more qualified teachers toward quitting.

If you read this board I’m surprised you’re caught off guard. Parents often talk about how they don’t want their kids to become educators. If education is such a poor option for a career, there aren’t going to be teachers to fill your kids’ classrooms.

Give it a little time and then contact the AP about how things are going, as needed.

Some substitutes are just warm bodies. (I include myself in that group.) But the shortages are so severe that schools may not have a choice.

Ask yourself why the teacher is leaving for the rest of the year. Being a teacher right now is unsustainable. Advocate for better working conditions. Advocate for giving teachers time to plan and the resources to teach. You will see this happen more often if something doesn’t change.

Having an IEP does not mean you get a choice teacher...in fact my son (with dyslexia)reliably got the least preferred teacher throughout ES.

Usually long term subs are pretty competent but not as acted to them emotionally since they know they're going to leave them in a few weeks or a month or two.

My kid with an IEP had a long term sub for first and fourth grades. Kid had an IEP for behavioral, academic and speech issues. It was fine. There was no special meeting - just the regular IEP annual meeting. I really liked the first grade sub, not that this matters.
