It is nice to have both, older kids can use them to build walls.

My 3 year old ignores duplo in favor of Lego but has quite good dexterity. My older daughter got bored with Duplo around 3.5. She loves to build the intricate sets. This is super kid dependent. If yours has good patience and dexterity would do Lego.

+1 if you don’t have magnatiles get those first.

My dd loves making magnatile castles for her stuffies. I’ve never gotten her to play with duplos or legos. YMMV of course.

Duplos are wonderful for building tall walls and mountains and all sorts of big backgrounds for all the tiny Lego creations. Keep them all!

It depends on motor skills and creative ability. Every kid grows in a different way. There is no one right way for a kid to grow. I do birthday parties with legos. Usually, for 4-6 year Olds, i bring regular Legos as well as duplos. They have fun with both.

The main thing about Legos is that kids learn the joy of building. It's about being able to express themselves just like you do with art. Whether it's duplos or Legos, they are expressing themselves just the same.

My daughter is turning 4 and absolutely loves legos (and is able to snap them together without any trouble) but she’ll just as happily play with duplos—and considering that she has a little brother who’s only 15 months, it’s been great to have her excited to play with both.

+1

Our 7yr old uses both Duplo and regular Lego. Likely will continue with both at least for another year. Regular Lego was really hard for DC until age 7, although we started adding that to the Duplo at age 5.

Magnatiles started age 4 and still in regular use.
