Yup very common in my HS and college - late 80s/early nineties. Being a Dead Head was cool, and all the Dead Heads wore them.

I loved my Baja! But I wore them around middle school and definitely didn't associate them with drugs. Slightly hippie vibe but that's it. So cozy - I want one!

But yeah I def associate them with pot smoking and hackeysack - was an east coast kid in the 80s. I sort of love them now. I don't smoke pot or surf but I just like the look now. And a pocket!

I grew up in SoCal, went to the original Ridgemont High and you'll pry my Baja hoodie from my cold, dead hands.

Lol, this takes me back. When I was growing up in the 80s those hoodies were definitely worn by those in the weed-loving community. Not sure what the association is now.

I've always assumed those who wore these were either pot smokers, or Spicoli, wanna be pot smokers. But I wouldn't call this drug culture though.

I think they were sort of tied to weed fashion in the 90s as well, at least where I lived. BUT I was recently on an accidental road trip from Vegas to Utah (LOOONG story), and ended up buying one from a gas station bc I was freezing
