I 100% support this. I make an effort not to ask for professional advice from people unless I am actually their client or patient.
My running partner is a therapist. Someone said once “that’s awesome, she must be a great listener!” And I had to explain that we are friends and she is not MY therapist.
I’m thankful that I have a boring job no one would ever ask about outside of work.

OP here. My personal cell number is just that. Personal. Not for business use. I am not a 24 h vet. The fact that they are clients of the practice I work at changes nothing other than it explains why I am the one they called. It does not excuse the fact that they called at all. The information they were looking for was easily obtained elsewhere but they thought it was okay to text me at a very late hour, totally disrespectful of my personal time not to mention my sleep.
My post was not a half truth. It was 100% factual and I stand by the statement.
Thank you to EVERYONE ELSE who replied offering support. Being a veterinarian is not an easy job!
You simply give them two numbers of 24/7 Animal Hospitals or Vets and tell them if they'd like an appointment to call your office at XXX and give the time it opens.

NP. I disagree. These are folks getting the vet’s personal number from the school directory and calling after hours. That’s extremely rude, whether you are an established patient or not!

I’m the pp who asked if they were at least patients. Being established patients doesn’t excuse what they did, even though it would be even worse if they weren’t even your patients. It’s an abuse of the school directory to text a medical professional on their personal cell phone for medical advice. We all know that’s not what the school directory is for. Shame on them.

I am so sorry that you have to put up with this. Thank you for taking care of our animals.
I admit to having called the after hours emergency number for my vet. In both cases, my beloved animal was dying, and, in both cases, the emergency vet accommodated me. I can't imagine calling the vet's personal number.

I text my vet fairly often, but he’s an equine ambulatory provider and he appreciates knowing about potential issues…I’ll text him something like “just a heads up, Gumby is having mild colic symptoms, gave him 10cc of Banamine and will let you know if he starts looking more serious” which as a large barn client of 15 years, I know he would prefer to a call.
I never text my pet vet that doesn’t offer emergency care. I take them to the pet ER if something is urgent. Boundaries, pet owners!

Being a vet seems very tough - thank you for the work you do. I’ve been so grateful to the vets who were there for my beloved pets (exotics, so not easy to find).
