Assuming 7 is first grade, I wouldn't sweat it for another couple of years. Even thereafter, he could pick up a stick in fifth grade (or even later) and be just fine, especially if he's a good athlete. If he's not a great athlete, his lacrosse career was always going to be short so no harm in not starting. If his friends gravitate toward it, support him if/when he shows interest. If he's behind, put him in an appropriate level of competition and tell him at that time he'll need to get better to play with his experienced friends. I would not force it, especially with competition that's too rough.
Until then, dad just needs to go in the backyard and throw with him and give him some chances to shoot. Heck, give him a tennis ball so he can wind up at dad.
