Huh? From my own Indian-American perspective, people in my community bought Hondas and Toyotas as their starting cars/minivans- because of reliability, cost and utility. When they had a bit of extra money they moved on to Lexus, BMW, Audi, Porsche for status and comfort.

Most of them are getting Tesla for their drive-around-the-town car that is eco-friendly. It is not seen as elite but a very pragmatic choice in terms of reliability, eco-friendly, cost, features, safety etc. It appeals to our nerdy and cost-conscious mindset. And you can bet your bottom dollar that most Indian-American Tesla owners have solar roofs at home or free chargers at work. Idiots we are not!

What elitism and status? Musk is producing Tesla in India now. It is going to flood the domestic market in India and going to be as common as your corner snack-vendor.

Seriously, I did not expect to like the Tesla but then I sat in one and I loved the smooth ride and lack of noise. Also, I liked the glass roof a lot. But more than that, I have realized that I can trust the hive-knowledge of my fellow Indian-Americans. If they are buying it, then they have already crunched the numbers and done the cost-benefit analysis.

BTW - I had a Corolla once and I loved that car too.

Be my guest. My next car will be a plug-in so I never need to breathe in gas fumes, have the smell of gas on my hands, look out for shady types that hang around stations, and wait in a line for a pump. 5 mins? Not where I live.

Now I feel like I’m seeing a lot of Rivian vehicles and they look like something out of a sci-fi movie. That’s how Teslas seemed at first, especially the one in our school drop off line with the gull wing doors.

Was in Vancouver a few weeks ago, and every Uber/Lyft we got was a tesla. I mean yymv and all that (pun intended) but I agree with the op.

Everyone after they bought a tesla: my favorite is that I never have to go to a gas station.

I have one and I agree they are ugly. I don't care. I don't want to drive a gas-powered car and Tesla is still a good choice for an EV.

SO bought an S a few years ago. I HATE that car.

It is supposed to be one of the brand's premiere models, but to me, it feels cheap, is not an easy vehicle to drive (the steering wheel alone makes me insane), scares me because of the way it unlocks, and supports someone I do not admire (Musk).

I don't even want to be a passenger in that car, let alone the driver.
