14 year old

9:30/10-6:15

Not enough…

My 13 yr old sleeps 10:30-6:00. There is a lot of homework to be done most nights, plus sports

Nah. Your kid is just not in a rigorous program. A hard core high school program (including schools like Whitman) will have them up til 1 am doing homework every night if they are in honors classes.

Nope. Your kid just either can’t keep up or isn’t being honest with themselves about their phone use while doing HW.

My junior son is taking AP Calc BC, AP Lang, AP Physics, APUSH, Spanish 4, CS Data Structures, and AP Psych. He plays varsity and club sports and is involved in several other ECs. He uses his time efficiently in class and during the free block every other day. He has 7 or 8 hours after school with which to study, do HW, play sports, go to clubs, eat dinner, etc. It seems to be enough time when coupled with various hours on the weekend and days off.

I would encourage all parents to check the digital well-being or time app on their kids' phones to see how much time is being wasted there.

I agree. And if staying awake until 1am every day is required to be in a “rigorous program” then I’ll pass anyway.

9th grader doesn’t get home from sports practice till close to 7, after showering and dinner homework doesn’t begin till 8 (a few evenings a week they have an meeting/ additional activity till 9 or 9:30) No block scheduling and a very rigorous course load, 2 AP classes as a 9th grader (we don’t live in the DC area)

We consider it an early night if they are in bed by 10:30, norm is 11-11:30 and a bad night is midnight. Obviously I would prefer 10:30 every night and there is def some time spent on the phone with friends but it works for them. They are much happier, motivated and perform at a higher level with a crazy schedule. We’ve tried both ways and this was def the better way (for them).

NP, my kid isn’t in a school that gives that amount of HW and this year doesn’t have a class first thing. It’s been a life changer and he’s overall so much more pleasant. He’s in bed between 10-11 and up about 8.

Mine is upstairs in her room by 930 and up at 630 or 7 depending if she has any clubs in the morning. Sometimes she goes straight to sleep but no electronics allowed at bedtime.

Or they go to St. Albans, Sidwell or GDS.

DDs are 10 and 7. Both good students and in a busy/time consuming activity. Older one asleep by 10:15, sleeps until 8:15. Younger one asleep by 9:30, wakes at 7:15. We are in LCPS with the later start times.

My 14 yo usually sleeps 10pm-7am. He is sometimes up later finishing homework, but he gets a lot of it done at school/on the bus, does any assignments/studying he already knows about on the weekend, etc. I expect it will get harder later in HS once he’s taking AP classes.

I take phones so they can shower brush teeth etc....they move faster that way so they can get phones back...then they have phones in bed till 9 (6th grader) and 9:30 - 9:45 9th and 10th grader. Alarm goes off at 6:30 for wake up. 6th grader sleeps in a bit till 7
