I think you are looking for something like this:

There are cheaper ones (Google Remote Oven Thermometer), but Thermoworks products are top notch.

Get an instant read thermometer. You open the oven door, poke the thermometer in, 2-4 seconds, it will beep, then you take it out, close the oven door and can check the readout. Here is one example:

https://www.amazon.com/BHY-Thermometer-Digital-Waterproof-Grillers/dp/B0CF1DCFBR/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?crid=1ON99WFG91XKP&keywords=instant%2Bread%2Bmeat%2Bthermometer&qid=1696444744&s=industrial&sprefix=instant%2Bread%2Bmeat%2Bthermomete%2Cindustrial%2C104&sr=1-2-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&th=1

It fits your criteria (1) does not use your phone/app (2) does not leave oven door cracked open for a cord (3) does not require you to stick your head into the oven. The display does not automatically clear. You either manually clear it or it turns off after 10 min. It's LCD, so doesn't use up a lot of battery power when on.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I love you!

You're welcome.

But am I going to have to put my face right up near the hot pan to read the thermometer? Or will the temperature stay on the screen for a while after I take the thermometer out of the meat so I can read it?

There are some that have a "display hold" button you can press to keep the display on that temp while you remove the probe.

But most people pull the item out of the oven, set it on the stovetop or counter, close the oven door, and take the temp reading. Your face won't be any closer to read the display than you'll need to be just to handle the pan. If additional time is needed, put the item back in the oven. This helps keep the heat in the oven, not escaping into the kitchen.

Are you Mr Magoo? Maybe you need to see an optometrist

Unless the meat is 0.5 inch tall I really don’t understand your question. The thermometer sticks out. You just read it. No squinting or sticking your face right up against the meat is required.

Take the food out, take the temp, then put the food back in the oven.

This. 100% this. We will never go back to using (or attempting to use) anything else. It's so easy, and our meat has never been more perfectly cooked
