There's a modern cottage style that has some momentum. It's not yet popular with mainstream builders, but shows up on design sites. I think it's likely next. Fortunately, done well, it can be a better fit for our area.

I'm going modern castle. Every style comes back around, and its time for castles again.

The answer is no. Just drive through McLean and Great Falls and take a look at the new houses being built in those communities. People who don't like the style can buy older homes, but it's difficult to find new construction in other styles unless you commission something yourself. That says something.

We're fine with craftsman or farmhouse , but the former is timeless as you can tell from places like cape cod

It is always the same house - a variation on the center hall colonial - just with a different veneer.

There is one sitting in Takoma Park. I don't think the house is ugly, it just doesn't fit the neighborhood.

It's funny how marketing has actually turned the idea into "superior" construction or some sort, when its anything but. Good for builders, bad for buyers IMO. Kind of like demin....cheap material but hey, if you want to pay $500 for a pair of jeans, someone will sell it to ya. Quality construction for me means masonry exterior, high quality windows, roofing, hvac, real hardwood flooring, etc, etc. I'm not going to pay premium for clapboard with manufactured stone exterior, and other cheap stuff. You get the point...

+1. Yes....they look cheap

I'm not a huge fan of the $2M+ panda bear Arlington new builds. I still love elements of well done modern farmhouse style.

There are certain very classic houses that don't really go out of style. Think any Nancy Myers movie - I'd take the Father of the Bride house still 30+ years later (at least the exterior). I'd try to stick with something more classic if I were building a house.

BUT for unknown reasons all the new-builds seem to be in that style.

Sorry but I think the new design looks great. We are overdue for a change and this was a neglected style.

It can look nice in a less urban area that actually makes sense for a farmhouse, like it would work in CT or New England. Not in the mid Atlantic sprawl.
