I didn’t share ahead of time because I didn’t want to listen to judgmental comments about our name choices. Unfortunately we got plenty of judginess anyway after the fact (my kids names are pretty pedestrian, nothing too out there)… there’s no pleasing some people.

Yes! Totally normal unless you want people telling you how much they hate your name. Our baby our choice. You name your baby whatever you want!

Some people wait to share after the baby is born and named. You avoid the family members who want to not only criticize, but also to lobby for you to change your choice and name the baby something else. So you wait until the baby's name is on the birth certificate to announce it. Then you only have the critique, but not the pressure to change it to something you (the parents) will hate.

I highly recommend not finding out the sex and not telling anyone the potential names. It makes the birth an actual big deal.

People are so judgmental about names and have no qualms about sharing their displeasure of your name choices before the baby is born. They act personally insulted if you choose a name they don’t like. No one voices their displeasure with your name after the baby is born. If they don’t like it, they suck it up and stay quiet.

In Jewish tradition it’s bad luck to share because the birth. But also we didn’t want anyone’s opinion.

I think it's fairly common but who knows how many choose to announce the name vs how many don't

I think it's pretty weird though to announce the name of previous babies but withhold the name of the new baby unless there was some negative drama surrounding the previous babies' names. If there wasn't any negativity then this would certainly be the parent's right but I could understand family being confused by it.
