If your coach is adhering to some position based pattern for substitution I'd think about a new team/coach. Coaching is not done from a playbook its a dynamic decision making process. Injury, exhaustion, poor play, an immediate teaching moment etc etc etc
All good reasons to sub out at any time for any reason not due to some pattern of play or time allotted.

OP here. Should have clarified that the substitution rules for their league do not allow players to be subbed back in after subbing out in either half. They can return at any point in the second half though if they subbed out in the first half.

What league has substitution rules like that at U13? I know it happens at U15 and above in some leagues, but at U13 (middle schoolers on the full field for the first time) that seems excessive.

ECNL has those subbing rules.

OP, a 13 year old should be able to play winger the whole time, if they are not injured. If your kid is getting subbed out earlier than you think they should, they likely need to work on cardio AND/OR the coach is hiding them in that position and giving them minimal playing time.

U13 makes them 11-12. And it’s more so that playing an entire half seems like a lot for my kid. Trying to understand the necessary conditioning needed.

Any U13 kid playing Winger on full size regulation 11v11 field, and can attack plus run back to defend full length of field for an entire game should be considered a freak.

For older ages for two kids with multiple coaches what we've seen is back line stays on field for the entire game barring some terrible performance or injury.
Goalies subbed at halves.
Some mid-fielders and strikers subbed out at 20-30 minutes/whole first half if they are doing well.
Wingers subbed out the most, usually anywhere from 15 minutes to 20-30 minutes.
