Really, you months of living expenses in liquid cash AND own a vacation home?? Get real. Feds don’t know when they will be paid, this could easily go into 2-3 months of now pay. Our mortgage is $3k, so just to keep roof on our head we will need $10k liquid.

Who in their right mind would drop $1ks more for a vacation that could be cancelled at any moment?

So I know OP is some weird case, like an old dude who bought homes when they were cheap or family money.

But yeah, I'm a Fed and the breadwinner. We'll be living leanly to preserve cash flow. Plus, kids are in school so travel is not in the cards. I have a long list of chores and repairs to do around the house, if it happens.

The last time the military was part of a shutdown was 2013. It was for 16 days, so we missed one paycheck which was later paid. We were not part of the 2018 shutdown because the defense budget was passed separately.


The Coast Guard was affected by the 2018 shutdown because they are housed in DHS not DOD.

Nobody had a job that's that important, Fed or private sector. We're all replaceable. That being said, if we're shut down, Feds legally cannot work. Not their fault.

I'm a GS-12 with a non-Fed wife who makes about the same. Smartly, I have an emergency fund. But still not going on vacation since wife is working and kids in school. Besides, all the national parks are closed.

I love that that is the focus and not the vast majority of Feds I know (including myself) who will be required to continue working with a paycheck coming at some unknown date and inability to use our own personal leave. It’s literally forced work, no sick leave, no vacation leave, and we’ll pay you at some unspecified date.
