On the girls side, I prefer dd playing on a top team with top coaching rather than getting a charity spot in the ID clinic since USSoccer gives spots to all area teams.
Not necessarily true. There are clubs that don't send any players. It is not really a preference of one thing or the other. A good player can be on a top team and also be invited to an ID clinic. There are many top clubs that send multiple players from a good team.
US Soccer is not like ECNL, which wants to keep all its clubs happy. ECNL will give all-conference honors out to every club. (With better clubs getting more kids.) US Soccer is less beholden to the clubs.

I don't think they publish a lot of information on the ID clinics. It's very hard to predict. I don't think they want the system to be transparent, as they want flexibility.
To answer the OP, my understanding is that the coach needs to recommend players, and a scout needs to come and watch those players, I believe at least twice.
Starts at U14 with a wider net and the pool of players narrows each year. W/r/t Manassas, there were 20 players invited at the U15 level (from NC, VA and MD), and I would assume 30 at U14 based on what was done last year.
So only players who have been scouted before would make it to the ID camp? Our team only got 2 players invited and did significantly better that two other teams in our conference that each got 4-5 players invited. I’m having a hard time believing that our coach only recommended 2 so maybe the rest just didn’t get seen?
It's possible the coach recommended more players and they didn't get scouted in time. Or scout didn't like something for whatever reason. It's still a very subjective process. And some coaches seem to have more influence than others. Also, although a team might not be as good, the players invited may be playing above age level on a club's older team. It is not an exact science, so some deserving players will get left out, but I believe ultimately they are only looking for a couple of standouts.

I would look at the lists if I were you.

Anonymous wrote:I'm the OP. Thanks for the answers. I'm mostly interested in understanding the girls side (should have said that). So seems like if they only had 30 players from U14 from all of VA, MD, and DC, then not all clubs are contributing players. (And from what I've seen on social media for U14 and U15 clubs highlighting their girls who got selected, that seems right). Seems somewhat more selective if not all coach recommendations get a spot. That's what I was trying to understand. Thanks!
