You don't need to "open" primaries to independents. Just do jungle primary + run-off election (like California) or ranked choice voting (like Alaska).

Get the parties out of the primary business. California and Alaska sent sensible moderates to Congress via these processes.

It’s even worse with ANC representatives. They get elected with eight votes and then spend their term giving their constituents the finger.

Agreed, RCV would actually move the needle here. No longer will worthless stuffed shirts like Anita Bonds skate through their primaries winning ~35% of the vote while the field splits the opposition vote.

As an Independent m I registered as a Democrat for just this reason.
