But there are many reasons why we gravitate towards some things and dislike others and may not know why. If your son is dyslexic he will shy away from subjects that require reading. My own DW rarely read for pleasure but it wasn’t it tested as an adult did she learn that she had a genetic problem with reading (not dyslexia) that made reading tiring. Testing for us elucidated homework problems one child was having - she had a very high IQ but very low processing speed. Homework took forever and wasn’t a pleasurable task.My ADHD kid can’t write papers because she cannot organize the paper -or even what she wants to say-in her head. And so on. Finding out that she was gifted but slow explained her frustration and dislike of much of school. We moved her to a more understanding school and she became a much happier and successful student

She said “any responses appreciated”. Can you not read? Between my two kids we’ve done seven rounds of neuropsych testing to discover precisely why they can’t learn well. And guess what? It’s genetic and why DW and her relatives did not do well in school but neuropsych testing didn’t exist back then. Fortuna we discovered the issues early enough to get proper counseling and therapy and private schooling. Did you do that well for your children?
