That thread was about futsal generally with some comments about this issue mixed in.

This thread is on-point for the specific topic being discussed: alternatives to Alexandria futsal now that they’ve moved to Maryland.

Also it’s worth it’s own thread, as the news about such an important change has not been adequately communicated to Alexandria parents — who may find their kid screwed out of a chance to play futsal this season if they only find out about their kids’ practices being moved to Maryland when TeamSnap gets updated with the practice schedule in late November.

I just commented the same so that's 2 people that realize the question was a double thread. It asked for other local options on NOVA which that thread list multiple.

Wanting to derail the question to focus on ASA location change is your personal preference.

Yeah because there aren’t multiple threads in MLS Next vs ECNL; VYS; requests for “best” clubs; etc. 90% of the discussion on here is a rehash of the same things being discussed from slightly different angles.

Give it a rest. You’re making it look like you’re trying to hide something.

That's fair. Not letting the parents know is unreal smh

I'm sure there's more info forthcoming. Putting it on Instagram is hardly keeping it a secret.

Where is it on instagram? I still can't find the info online. Can someone please provide an actual link? TIA!

There is a thorough thread with many club names listed a few days ago.

Covid changed a lot of things for futsal as many of the schools that used to rent space stopped. In addition, futsal competes for space with volleyball and basketball and often finds itself as the third wheel, odd man out where there just isn’t ANYWHERE available in the area. Schools have their own teams, rec gives for the public schools to basketball and there aren’t any giant churches or independent athletic centers with space in Alexandria (like you see in Fairfax or Maryland).

I know the person whose job last year was coordinating all the practices for futsal and she was really having such a super hard time finding space. Same issue for club volleyball. demand is so much higher than supply and larger spaces like ACHS or the BI or SSSAS high school gyms that could hold several practices at once are not available at all.

I don’t think ASA wears out their welcome, just that spaces like the sportsplex or Kids Choice get booked. Onelife fitness on Eisenhower doesn’t have its sports court anymore so they can no longer practice there (my kid used to have club volleyball there).

Tennis courts throughout Alexandria

This was the worst. Multiple times, I saw kids' legs slide under the fence. And when we went to watch the Futsal Pro team, the same thing happened to an opponent's leg.

A few examples for those that have been around a while
OneLife Fitness on Eisenhower was used for one year
District Sports Center used a couple of years
Outdoor lay down courts on top of turf at Brenman
Tennis courts throughout Alexandria
Browne Academy
and the list goes on and on

Point is they have run out of options. Either shrink the program which defeats the revenue generating model or find alternative space that can accommodate the program. Your travel issues are not their problem.

Curious - why did you say they “wear out their welcome” at any of the previous locations? Was there some issue with Alexandria players or families using the aforementioned practice spaces? None that I’m aware of.

In any case, of course my “travel issues” aren’t Alexandria’s problem, except to the extent that I am part of that “revenue generating model” as a paying customer.

Not all families have an au pair or a stay-at-home parent who can drive anywhere needed; not all families have one child, many have multiple children for whom they’re trying to juggle school and extracurricular activities with parent work schedules; some families are single-car families or rely on public transportation for some of their getting around the CRAZINESS that is DMV traffic during evening rush hour.

A relocation of this significance out of the City of Alexandria—through a traffic choke point to a destination in Maryland across the Potomac—is a big deal for some families. It would have been nice had this been clearly communicated to parents with the recognition of what a major change it is—well enough in advance to allow those families to make other plans. (It would have been even nicer for parents to have been asked for input into this decision before it was finalized.) I am sure it’s just an oversight or underestimation by someone of what a big deal this is for some families.

We’ve been happy to be part of the ASA futsal program and have nothing but positive things to say about the program itself. While I’m disappointed they’re relocating it to Maryland, I’m just glad that I found out about it by luck on this forum while there is still time to consider other options.

FYI Intensity is teaming up with SYC to do futsal at the Fairfax Sportsplex if that is closer to you. Intensity posted about it on their insta.

Has the Fairfax Sportsplex been renovated any? We went there a few years ago to watch my son's coach play in an indoor game, and it wasn't the greatest.

They're never going to renovate it because they don't have to; it's ALWAYS packed. I go there a lot for my kid's volleyball. It's the same.

They renovated during the pandemic. It's sufficient and better than going to Maryland. It would make more sense to go to Maryland if they intend to use the old DC Hyper staff. But that doesn't seem likely.
