I was at a CostCo in Florida a few years ago and watched an old guy, when done putting stuff in his car, just push the cart away from him into the lane of traffic. Like okay, if you're too lazy to put the cart in the corral, but to just randomly push it away toward other cars? Wow. (And yes I'm someone who puts the cart away.)

I think in the last 10-15 years "unwritten rules" have kind of disappeared, because I'm always seeing people act in a way I would never have expected when I was younger. I honestly can't think of any former unspoken rule that I haven't seen broken in the last decade.

How about, be kind, but stand up for what’s right first.

You may be unkind to a special person here. You never know. You get involved, but defused until you know the whole story and even then, it's better just to chill out. It's not easy to be the person who yells at the cashier. Not something a good/happy/regular person does.

This. In US and Western World they keep count and you have to pay back. Back in a day, we didn't because we were all poor and taking someone's money or giving someone money, didn't make a difference. We all still stayed poor. I have lived in both worlds and see how they both makes sense in their respective worlds.

This thread is such a weird mix of actual unspoken life rules and people trying to articulate their personal prime directives.

When someone ask “how are you?,” they’re not really asking how you are. Just smile and say “fine, and you?”

I'm mid 40s and when I was young, there was a great wringing of hands about how women didn't ask for raises, didn't ask for exceptions, etc. We had literal workshops on how to send your dinner order back. So now we ask for what we want - and we're pushy.

Alternatively, the squeaky wheel gets the oil.

Everyone is pretty self absorbed, so most people aren't paying that much attention to you. So when you make mistakes, and you will, few people will notice and even fewer will care, so try to relax.

There is no permanent record, you can take your story almost any where from where you are (well except if you go to prison).

Money is probably the most important thing. Doing good, being kind, all great sideshows, but without money life will be despair. You can't just live simply, and living within your means often means living in squalor -- so prioritize money, and move on from there.

Money isn’t everything; it’s the only thing.
