FWIW, a friend of mine is a designer at one of the furniture chains mentioned here; she knows little about interior decorating and really just follows some software they have that helps them figure out what to sell together for a particular space. I'm sure some folks are better, but it would give me pause.

Ethan Allen doesn’t charge for their design services, so if you like their stuff, it works.

I’ve had great experiences with Ethan Allen. Be clear at the outset that you want them to tell you if you’re making a mistake.

I brought my vintage front hall rug every time I bought something, no matter what room. Now my whole house flows.

We’ve used both havenly and the free design services from the big stores. For the big store services, we got designs from three for each space we were considering and then pulled together different elements (including using some old furniture we had inherited). I liked the designs but didn’t want to whole thing to match so pulling favorites from various designs worked well.

For havenly/online services, we really liked the designer we worked with and thought she did a great job. Two of the three rooms she designed we followed 75% and they are lovely (made some small changes to incorporate some functional changes, etc.). I loved having her for the layouts especially. The third room wasn’t as successful but I think it’s because we have less freedom as we were trying to keep the paint color and major furniture.

I've used them for a couple of rooms and been happy as well. We did the option that came with a floor plan. I bought everything outside of Havenly as I have heard returns are difficult through them.
