Subject: Family Trip - spring break
OP and I know these trips won’t last forever. But they have been a bright spot for my son who has had a tough time and really benefited from spending time with his cousins and uncles, so I’ve made a point of prioritizing them when we are able to make it happen. We have no family nearby.

SIL was probably surprised at your offer and took it at face value. How many more years are you planning to take extended family vacations over Spring Break? Beginning high school would have seemed like a natural end point, or beginning college, or working a first job and not having vacation time, etc. I read your OP as you plan for these trips to continue forever, which probably isn’t realistic.

X1000 There is always at least one or two teachers that intentionally schedule a high point test, presentation or something in class that really screws any kid that takes off. Grades count in high school. You would basically have to lie and say they were sick.
I had zero problem taking kids out in ES but it’s way to punitive in high school and middle school,

Whatever. Spring Break will be the week before Easter next year too, just so you aren't "shocked" by it.

Just make it a summer trip and stop with the drama. No one needs to miss school for a family trip. Do it in the summer or over the holidays, or make it a very short trip using any spring break overlap days.

This. Easter dates move around, so spring break moves around as well. Not sure why this is being treated as such a huge deal. OP also should ask herself if the MS/HS kids might be aging out of this kind of trip with cousins anyway.
