For a sectional with a hardwood frame and basic sturdy fabric I think you have to pay about $3k and might go up north of $5k to get exactly what you want.

That's a big piece of furniture, so if you can use it for 5+ years then do it. If you see yourself moving to a bigger space or smaller space in the next few years, don't limit yourself.

I am somewhat cheap and I would probably spend $3700 for a good sofa.

That’s how much ours cost. We take good care of it, and it’s in great shape. But if you have young kids or teens who like to have a lot of friends over, I’d go cheaper.

I don’t know. Whatever the sofa I like costs. $3700 seems reasonable.

It depends how old your kids are and how much disposable income you have. Young kids will trash any sofa, expensive or not. Ask me how I know

Also keep in mind that there's no such thing as a classic sofa that will never go out of style. Those sofas from the early 2000's with the curved arms etc. don't look modern anymore. The more modern styles popular today won't look new and fresh in 10 years. $3,700 doesn't seem exorbitant to me, but just go into it with the understanding that no sofa will be in vogue forever.

I’m in the buy once and buy well camp. I would invest in a high quality sofa.

3700 is pretty standard nowadays. My not so large sofa cost that five years ago. Sectionals are like double that these days.

I’m very frugal, but I spent $3400 on a small sofa that was on sale a year ago and have no regrets. Our sofa is in near constant use and I’m prioritizing comfort. The only other expensive furniture I have is an extremely high quality mattress because sleeping well is important to me.

We did this and regret it.
The sofa is getting constant use. At this rate, cheap sofas look bad within a year.

Uh…no. No decent couch out there for $1000, it’s okay if that’s what you want to spend but it won’t last a long time and poor quality to boot.

After having a crate and barrel sofa that still looked almost new after 10 years, I spent about $7k on a sectional. It’s been 5 years and it looks perfect. It’s worth it for quality furniture that you want to keep for 20 years. Similar to disposable fashion vs classic staple pieces - you have to set the appropriate expectations about how long you want to have it and invest approximately (or not) in quality.
