My 6th and 9th graders will be missing the whole thanksgiving week this year. They will make sure to let teachers know ahead so they can take tests early or get any work they miss to make up. No big deal.

Does DC generally do well in school and have no problem keeping up? Do they tend to not otherwise take a lot of sick days? Then I wouldn’t hesitate - especially before a holiday.

We’ve pulled our kids for family trips and it has not been an issue at all, even in classes that get high school credit.

Middle school sure. Just communicate w teachers and administrator to get any work that might be missed. High school —not us.

In public school, with good students, a day here and there is no big deal. At least not where live.

And that particular day, I think the absentee rate is over 25%.

Do you mean the Wed before Thanksgiving? Our school is off that day anyway. I probably won’t take off Tuesday just for this and would save it for a different day. But it’s fine if you do. I let mine skip some of the half days in middle school to sleep in.

We take our kids out all the time for trips. DS will miss a few days to go see his sisters at college for a football game. But he'll be "sick" as far as the school is concerned. If I even bother to call it in.

Personally I would change the tradition to the weekend before, or the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend or something, unless it's a half day. But many other kids probably end up missing that whole week.

Sorry. In our school they change from simply “passing” and “failing” to high school prep with actual grades, so every little thing matters a bit more. Our school is a bit unique so I was wrong to assume every school was the same.


I don't think that is unique and I would not consider it high stakes. Most middle schools give actual grades. Do these grades factor into college admissions?

OP—DC is taking high school courses that count towards high school GPA.


Is your child okay with possibly missing a test or two? Mine wouldn’t. That is pretty much the only consideration; would they be okay with making up work after the break? In 7th grade, DD always had big assignments or tests right before long holidays so they wouldn’t have it hanging over their head during the break.

OP -- if your kid were sick, would you let her miss the day? If she did, would she be able to catch up what she missed? If she can skip a day being sick, then surely she can handle catching up if she were well???

On a matter of principle, I wouldn't allow this. Teach your kid to be in school. As it is, school is so minimal if you're in public.
