But if the fake jewelry looks real then they could still be targets. Doesn’t really protect you from being assaulted. Better to just not wear any jewelry- fake or real.

Eh, I've never worn expensive jewelry, purchased expensive cars, or used an expensive handbag. I've gotten through life just fine, and don't have to look over my shoulder all the time. And, I have some savings.

I'm a resident in DC and I do feel like I can still wear luxury items that aren't obvious. I agree with the person who said it really depends where they are going. I do hope public outrage brings all this criminal activity to a stop. I have faith things will get better.

I’m Pakistani American and wear gold bangles. I don’t take them on trips, but in bad neighborhoods I push them way under my sleeves.

I live in Bethesda and have never felt unsafe there but some neighborhoods of DC I do.

I love the subway naps in Tokyo. My elementary age DD was sitting next to me reading a book just before evening rush hour and a businessman nodded off next to her and eventually fell asleep on her shoulder. He was so fast asleep and she was so engrossed in her book that my DH was able to switch spots with her without the businessman noticing nor my DD noticing why he’d switched with her!
