Are the open gyms truly optional or will my kid be penalized for not attending? We really don't want to bother with the hassle if its not necessary.

Yep, that's why Gainesville almost always had a good D1 team and multiple other teams and Manassas Park, not so much.

The out of Fairfax teams also get half their games as actual close-by home games, which I find unfair. We had "home" games at Bryant High School and live in Herndon.

Some clubs get entire counties. Arlington has something like 1,000 residents for every resident our club has.

It is supposed to be based on where players from their rec leagues live but again, its all on the honor system. The orgs with the fewest zip codes are probably the most honest. No way does BRYC, for instance, have that many rec players in 11 different zip codes.

I think the honor systems probably worked better before the explosion of AAU/year round teams and overcompetitive parents and coaches.

Which is crazy because BRYC has the most in-zone zip codes of any club. If you can't put a winning team together with 11 zip codes plus two exceptions, you are a crappy coach.

i wish they allowed more exceptions! We only have two organizations my kids can try out for, and I don't like the coaches at one of them. A neighboring team has an amazing coach but we would be zip code exceptions even though its closer by than one of our "assigned" team.

Right, it would be nice if the league actually checked instead of relying on the honor system.
Usually these AAU teams go to organizations with the most zip codes as they have D1 teams and as its easiest to work your AAU team in with 11 zip codes + 2 exceptions + possible address sketchiness. Then the actual Mclean/BRYC/CYA etc kids are the ones on the non-recruited D2 teams.

We did reach out to a few coaches of friends' teams and discovered that since we live in Arlington, our son can't try out for the Fairfax County teams. And we read the rules on the FCYBL site. Coaches told us many of the Arlington teams are very competitive and tend to carry their players from last year, so it may be hard to get noticed and break in if a lot of boys show up to the tryouts.

If anyone has any current useful info on Arlington Travel, we're all ears.

Arlington is having open gyms Sept 16 and 23 but you have to register. It would be good to attend and talk to the coaches. https://www.eventbrite.com/cc/atb-open-gyms-2023-2569229

Not all clubs even use zip code exceptions. Our rule is that they only go to kids who played in the house rec league or returning players who moved.

Which org is this? I wish ours had that policy.

Well the good news is arlington should have 2-3 teams for 7th grade boys and you get actual home games unlike the unlucky fairfax county teams who just get stuck playing anywhere.

The bad news is there will be lots of competition at tryouts. But honestly, if your son is such a strong player that you were debating whether fcybl was worthwhile, he will be good enough to at least make the 2nd team.
