We had a miserable experience with a math teacher at Westland Middle School. He was completely incapable of explaining concepts clearly, and unfamiliar with the subject. There were numerous complaints, but he kept coming back year after year. This was pre-pandemic.

To learn algebra, yes. But not necessarily to do well in algebra at school. Topics might not be taught in the same order/same way/same time. We tried to do this with an aops algebra class, and our kid learned some algebra but it didn’t overlap enough with class to make up for what was lacking there or to improve grades. We’ve also done RSM in the past, and it’s good for enrichment, but I don’t think it will make up for deficits in the class. I think tutoring would be better in this situation to target and reinforce what’s being covered at school.

Mathnasium. I think all parents who can afford it should have their kids be in that program or a similar program a few months a year.

DS’s teacher was like this in 5/6 compacted math. I only know bc it was during Covid virtual school and I heard it myself. I just had DS look at videos online and ask me for help when he needed it. We didn’t need to supplement.

Back to school night did not ease my mind. Looking into buying the teacher’s manual to support at home. Thank you for everyone’s suggestions.

Was this at TPMS? We just got an email from my child’s algebra teacher discussing what he’s been doing to “improve” and that he’s aware of parent concerns. My child hasn’t complained so now I’m concerned that I should be concerned.

Maybe this teacher is a sub or not certified to teach math.

This is a lame troll posting a fake story. The beginning of algebra is review of prealgebra, this early in the school year it’s just order of operations, expressions, numbers. The teacher didn’t make one careless mistake, but “several” and had to watch how to videos online, in class along with the students.

Come on, let’s be real, the OP didn’t come here to get a recommendation for online or in person classes as claimed in the original post.

Teacher performance in class is second hand information filtered through teenagers that are not known for being the most reliable sources. It’s fine to keep an eye on it in the future, but to contact the principal is just being a Karen.

Before you go this route you better make sure the teacher is in fact making errors. Is your understanding of algebra solid enough to understand if the teacher really was making a mistake and it wasn't just a short cut or careless error.
