If someone needs to stop, we stop. We try to combine stops - so we eat or fill up the tank, or whatever.
With kids an 8 hour drive is never eight hours. It’s 10. A four hour drive is going to at least be 4.5. Just build that in, and mentally prepare for it.

I was having flashbacks to MY dad! It felt so mean when I had to pee so badly and he was a jerk about it and wouldn’t stop.
