Parents paid tuition most of the semesters. It was under $900/semester (Cal State in the 90s.)
I paid for books (roughly $400/semester)
Rent ($600+/month)
Food (I went hungry a lot)
utilities
Gas, insurance, car payment
I paid all those expenses by working full time while going to school full time.

My older siblings both went to service academies so their undergrad was free.

I had a full ride scholarship for undergrad (state school) that covered tuition, room and board (it even covered a summer session if I wanted to take one). That same scholarship now only covers 50% of cost of attendance.

For my MS I had a fellowship the first year and a research assistantship the second year. Both covered tuition and gave me a stipend for living expenses. The town I lived in was very cheap, so the stipend was more than enough to live on.

I had a scholarship and worked. DH is military.

DH, paid 100% of 4 years of his college in cash. He had to stay home for a year and work to get more cash to pay for final year. His parents wouldn't fill out the loan applications that pertained to their finances. Such a weird situation.

My parents paid for college and I got a full scholarship for my master's degree (plus a stipend that paid my living expenses).

My husband’s parents paid for undergrad and his research grants / stipend paid for his masters and PhD. I had some help from parents, multiple merit scholarships, and I did an engineering co-op job 2 separate semesters that allowed me to pay my rent and food/expenses my junior and senior years. I also worked in a library on campus 12-16 hours a week.

Mom paid my undergrad. We are paying for our kids undergrad. We do not want them to have loans. They will have to pay grad.

For grad school I found a job that would pay for 80% of the tuition and my salary paid the remaining 20%. I didn't want any more loans.

Parents paid for undergrad but it was 30 years ago and really inexpensive vs the cost today. I went to grad school part time and paid for it myself as I went, no loans.

DH and I are paying for kids undergrad (both at schools <$30k/yr). They'll have to figure out grad school themselves.
