I am anal retentive and need come down in the morning to a clean house. Even if we have a huge party I stay up late and clean every last dish and glass before I go to bed.

Same and same.

Yup, I'm exactly like you. I need the house straightened up before I can go to sleep. I actually enjoy the cleaning process after a huge party - it's a time to chat with DH while putting everything away. It's sort of a capstone to the party.

I always make sure the kitchen and family room are clean and tidy before I go to bed. I hate coming downstairs to a mess in the morning.

I have older teens who go to bed after me. I do clean up the kitchen most nights but that doesn’t guarantee it will still be clean in the morning. Especially on weekends. Not a battle I choose to fight. Not a huge deal.

Kitchen, yes. The rest, no.

My kids are teens and go to bed after me so there's no way that would work. They put any dishes they've used in the dishwasher, but blankets are always out and probably a few other random things around. That doesn't bother me at all, though.

This, except the opposite. Even though every night I try to propel my body all over the house cleaning/tidying/preparing for the morning, my tired self decides its okay to let it go and collapse in exhaustion on the couch instead.

Not at all. We don't always even do the dishes immediately. But our house is often messy. I don't love that, but I can never seem to keep up/catch up and I've tried to find some kind of acceptance until I can.

Kitchen and dishes yes. Unless DH does it and he forgets to wipe counters. We tidy up toys before dinner as we can. Blankets and stuff if i have energy.

Nope. Just straighten when things get messy. Who gives so much of their life away to this most Sisyphean of tasks?

Definitely the kitchen is done. Maybe not if I had a big party, but usually. I actually have the kids clean their rooms for a few minutes before bed. It's made it possible for them to do it themselves and they don't get overwhelmed.

No absolutely not. That’s insane.

Dishes should be done as to not attract bugs, but if 1 or 2 dishes are still in the sink NBD. A pot might need to soak and be finished in the am.

But….
Not every toy is put away
Not ever blanket it's folded
Not every shoe is in its place
Not ever piece of mail is tidy
Not every piece of paper is perfectly in back packs
Tables and counters are still cluttered.
Clothes that are washed and folded but may not be put away.
Coffee tables have errant objects on them.

Life’s too short. If you enjoy it your way go for it but don’t put that BS on others.

And no I do not wash my undergarments separately.

I do the tidy-up after my work day ends and before it is cocktail hour. I want to relax at night, and it's hard to do so when there's junk around the house. Our house is never that messy though. And more importantly, i don't give a rats a** about stuff like wiping down the shower daily.

Now, with kids (mine are toddlers) we've found we have to clean at night, it's the only way to have some semblance of order. So - after dinner, before bed, the kids help us clean up all the toys on the main floor. After both kids are in bed, we clean up after dinner, do all the dishes, run the dishwasher, wipe down the counters, and spot sweep the floor if needed. (We unload the dishwasher in the morning during breakfast). Sometimes we do this right after the kids go down, sometimes it's happening at 11pm, but it always happens. If we clean right after bedtime, any dishes we create that night (like if we have a snack or a drink) we leave in the sink until the morning.

Almost identical for me except we clean the kitchen during bath time in general so after kids go down we can just collapse and chill.

Yes, though we don't leave it for right before bed. As we are about to leave a room it gets tidied. I mean, if you're sitting on the couch with a blanket and you get up from the couch, you take the five seconds to refold the blanket. When we make dinner we clean as we go, then clean as much as we can while it's cooking, then after dinner we fully clean up and prep for tomorrow's breakfast and kids lunches.
