+1
I checked in with my 9th grade homeroom this morning about how 1st day went. They all said they were tired because the building was soooo big and they had soooo many stairs. Also remember they are on brain overload with new information and coming off a summer lack of routine. Next week is better to assess what is really happening. Make a schedule adjustments the third week of school.

I drive my kid so she can get an extra half hour of sleep.

We are the last stop on our bus route and DC has to leave by 6:50 at the latest to catch it.

Our drive is 5-7min so warning bell is 7:40. We leave at 7:15am and she gets there 7:30 even with drop off traffic.

There is no bus for her. She does walk home.

When are your kids doing homework in this scenario? What does their after school schedule look like?

No devices after 9 on school nights. We may have to make exception for school work but will wait to see if needed. In bed no later than 10, but with devices off it’s usually earlier. Wake up at 6:15.

Asleep by 9 pm, up between 5 and 6:30 for morning sport workout depending on the day.

Between 10 and midnight. I’m trying to adjust him to between 10 and 11 but he has always been a night owl and typically eats a second dinner around 10 (first dinner between 6 and 8 depending on sports). He gets up around 6:15 to leave house around 7 for a 7:45 start. I’m also hoping we can push both of those a little later as we settle into the schedule.

Agree with PP that a ninth grader is going to be tired after the first few days of high school. Next week will be a better time to consider when lights out should be.

They are usually asleep by 10:30pm

Awake at 6:45am

Out the door 7:15am

This is us too. I drive her in so she can eat breakfast and get a 20min extra of sleep.

Parents saying 9pm are insane. That isn’t going to work for teens with sports, activities, jobs, and homework.

Wakes up at 6:30.

Not all kids need more sleep and this has nothing to do with MCPS.

Science disagrees with you.

Agree completely. My kids are little and I personally do enjoy the late start, but it’s obviously not the best system and I hope they change it at some point.

The key is their access to internet and phone. If you don't have control of that, good luck; and if you haven't been toeing that line from the start, it'll be a bit of a process to re-introduce those boundaries.

Internet (home and mobile) cut out at 9 on school nights, 11 otherwise.

If they need a computer for homework, they can use the desktop in the den.
