She was joining because that is how it was back in the day.

In the 80s in my one bathroom house with a well my mom only let us shower once a week.

Oh my goodness yes. They re-wear until they get food on them or smell a bit stale: whichever comes first.

we only own two pairs of pajamas and they usually just wear them around the house and sleep in just undies. So they don’t get washed until they look dirty.

Is her cleaning up very good? Not really, but she tries hard.

Rising 5th grader is fully responsible for getting himself up and ready into the morning (including making lunch and packing his backpack). He also empties the dishwasher.

Rising second grader-

Packs her own lunch the night before
Gets dressed
Does hair (I help if she wants a braid or tougher style)
Gets breakfast and puts her dishes in the sink
Puts on sunscreen
Brushes teeth

I am working on adding more: getting her backpack set up and clothes set out the night before since I often do that now. We don't bother making the bed.

Ours do. In addition they are to make their beds, bring their glass of water/bottle of water into the kitchen, and make sure the dog has water before leaving for school. DH and/or I help because we're a family and family members help each other. So DH might start suggesting things they can take for lunch and stuffing them in lunch boxes, while I clean up from breakfast or do a kid's fancy hairdo they want but can't do themselves.

Is my 1st grader the only school aged kid getting up at the crack of dawn, still? I guess he used to get up before 6, now it's more like 6:15-30, but still. Wish he would sleep another half hour.

How old is your child. I have 2nd and 5th graders. The 5th grader can get ready fully independently, she even sometimes makes breakfast for both of them. She does ask for help with her hair because it's long and she struggles putting her own hair in a ponytail.

The 2nd grader can, in theory, do everything by herself, but still needs a little prompting because she gets distracted. I don't trust her with the toaster oven but she can get herself cereal in the morning, occasionally she spills the milk but she also cleans it up mostly.

My 3rd grader (with adhd) gets himself dressed, makes the bed, feeds the cat. Then he plays until DH or I get up and make breakfast. He clears his plate after eating and then we have to remind and watch that he brushes teeth, uses bathroom and puts on shoes. Otherwise he would just start playing again. I pack his lunch and fill his water and put what he needs in his backpack.

Omg. My rising 1st grader (with adhd) is a mess compared to this. I wake her after she’s turned her alarm off. Then she says she’s too tired to get up for 15 minutes. She’s perfectly capable of dressing herself, but wants company and often I end up holding out her pants and putting her shirt over her head. Then I supervise bathroom and tooth brushing, rushing her because inevitably she’s running late. I brush her hair (again, she’s capable, but we are always running out of time). She neatens her bed while I make breakfast and lunch.

I try to get her up earlier but it’s really hard. The adhd meds make her fall asleep late so we are in an endless cycle of her sleeping in, rushing, and staying up too late (even when the lights are out by 8, she’s often awake in her room until 10/11).

On the bright side, she’s very sweet and flexible. She doesn’t care about being late, but she also rarely gets super upset about anything. She’s just east going and un-rushed.

2nd grader gets dressed, brushes teeth (but I supervise), makes his own breakfast (cereal, toasted waffle, or oatmeal), puts his dishes in the sink, and packs his backpack. I pack lunch and snack. We keep a list by his bag of everything that needs to be in it. I don't check.

Lol same but my 3yo gets a kick out of choosing clean pjs every night so I’m mostly not doing a good job with the convincing clearly.
