There are actual human beings who use those terms without irony? I mean, there’s what—a few hundred people outside of students, alums, and family who know what Smith is?

YES

It sounds like you’re taking to a toddler.

I’m a Vanderbilt alum. I dislike “Vandy” (but love the university itself).

I'm a Midwesterner who's been vacationing in and defending Alabama since the 90's, and Bama has always annoyed me. Like, are you too illiterate to say the entire word?

Whether the University of Utah follows this unusual approach or uses the more traditional sequencing of initials (such as University of Kentucky being called UK) will forever be a mystery. I can only imagine how many bar fights and divorces have resulted from disagreements about this unsolvable issue.

The University of Colorado went with CU in the 1920s so as not to be confused with the University of California system. The others in your list did the same thing. UK is University of Kentucky so University of Kansas went with KU. Indiana University is IU while University of Iowa is UI.

Judging from the defensive, insecure and grasping boosters on this site ..“wahoo” is pretty descriptive but I think “Dr Smiths” would be perfect
