Under things are to go under clothes. My dh has workout shorts that are as short as boxers, more comfortable and have a liner. He just wears those around the house and for errands etc. Nothing under them.
But he is a boxer/brief person otherwise.

To be clear, there are a wide variety of boxer shorts. If I’m grabbing the mail or getting something from the car in a T-shirt and something like this (https://www.hanes.com/hanes-cool-comfort-reg-men-s-boxers-pack-moisture-wicking-plaid-6-pack.html), no one is even going to notice they aren’t just regular shorts.

I’m sure it was a dig but one of the PPs said only in NJ, I do think this may be partly an Italian thing.


I think grabbing the mail in those is fine, Tony Soprano. But running errands out of the house in those boxers requires an additional pair of shorts.

That is fine. A bathing suit is widely understood to be worn outdoors without other clothing. Boxer shorts are underwear, designed to be worn under other pants. They have an open fly and are usually thinner material than actual shorts.

My grandfather used to do yard work wearing nothing but Dolphin shorts and we laughed about how old people just don't care anymore, but if I saw a 40 something man doing that I'd think he was a weirdo.

On your own property, as long as no neighbors can see, I think it’s fine. But if you live in the suburbs and he is in his underwear in the driveway with people walking by…no. Bending over and the fly opening up is pretty gross.
