Same goes for house chores, not required by parents as kids are supposed to do productive things or relax.

Lots of UMC and wealthy kids only do academics, extracurricular and internships until they graduate college and get a professional job. They don't have random jobs on their priority list.

I would have laughed because that seems like such a typical thing. Not just for young adults, but for everyone who has a maid (we don't). They pick up so the house can be cleaned by others. It's normal for that population, and that makes it gently amusing. To me, at any rate. It's not a criticism. We have the version where everyone has to pick up because I decided that we had time to clean the house together.

So you're just being insulting to this family because you felt judged. I think you're reading this entirely wrong.

The way that privileged people feel free to judge others is always amazing to me.

heh, regular people don't have a maid. regular people don't have their kids pick up because the maid is coming - they clean their rooms, and the other rooms, because that's how the house gets cleaned.

i mean, good for you for having your kids help - but i don't think there's any great virtue to picking up your room before the maid comes, versus just having a cleaner who does it themselves, which is what i assume is happening in your neighbor's house? like, let me just say that no kid is getting into college with an essay about how they had to pick up their room before the maid came, while the other kid down the street did not have to pick up their room before the maid comes.

They may have family money or trust funds. They may never have to work a day in their lives. It's none of your business.

My DD (18) works from home. She's an artist who does commissions. She probably looks like she doesn't work to our nosy neighbors.

My son is 18 and hasn't looked for a real job yet (he's done dog walking and dog boarding for neighbors). None of his friends have jobs.

Neither my husband nor I had jobs until our TAs in grad school or interning in medical school. None of our relatives and very few of our friends had jobs at those ages either.

So instead of "wondering" (criticizing), just relax. There are many families where this is normal. The presence and absence of low-level jobs has no bearing on future success.

Stay in your own lane.

Mind your own business.

Stop judging others.

Comparison is the theif of joy.

How about counting your own blessings.

OP you really seem to have a narrow life. People struggle with all sorts of mental health and physical health issues. I have a child who looks perfectly healthy who has serious health issues and already had something precancerous removed. MYOB and focus on your own children.
